Joey O'Brien is a highly dedicated personal trainer and the founder of Built by O'B, a fitness program that aims to help clients achieve their health goals through personalized training plans and nutritional coaching.

Joey's lifelong passion for sports and physical activity began at a young age and has continued to grow throughout his life. Despite undergoing four knee surgeries, including as young as 12 and as old as his college years, Joey has never let these setbacks hold him back. Instead, he has used his experiences to fuel his dedication and passion for fitness.

Joey's dedication and hard work have led him to achieve many impressive fitness milestones. He has competed in Crossfit for almost a decade and has completed multiple triathlons up to a half Ironman distance. Despite the challenges he has faced with knee surgeries, Joey has never let them hold him back from pursuing his passion for fitness. His commitment to his health and fitness journey has resulted in numerous accomplishments, including placing 2nd at the Illinois state weightlifting meet.

Joey's academic background is equally impressive, having graduated from The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a degree in Molecular & Cellular Biology and Psychology, with a Chemistry minor. His scientific knowledge and understanding of fitness and nutrition allow him to develop personalized training plans that are tailored to each client's unique needs and goals.
With the founding of Built by O'B, Joey's mission is to help individuals achieve their fitness goals through a holistic approach that emphasizes both physical and mental well-being. He understands the challenges that his clients may face and works with them to develop a personalized plan that fits their lifestyle and needs. His approach focuses on building strength, improving endurance, and developing a healthy relationship with food.

My wife and I are both in our early 40’s, and decided that as part of our New Year’s Resolution for 2021, we were going to get back in the gym. It was time to lose that COVID weight that so many of us had put on, and with 3 young children in activities 7 days a week, an increase in energy and stamina was a must. We were referred to Joey from a family friend, and decided that come January, we were going all in.
Before we started, Joey asked what our goals were, what any pain points might be, and developed a plan for us. We can truly say that Joey has continued to keep us motivated throughout the year by keeping things ‘Fun’ and ‘Fresh’. While Joey pushes us to our limits, the mood is always light and upbeat. We blast music to keep us moving depending on what’s motivating us that day and the workouts are never the same – in nearly 10 months, and now going 3 times a week, we have yet to have a single workout repeat itself. Joey always knows the right time to introduce a new movement or increase our weight safely and effectively. The movements are always being mixed and sequenced in ways to push our boundaries. Each workout is unique and combines focus areas different from the day before, with the same ultimate goals in mind.
We could go on and on about how much we enjoy working out with Joey, but simply put, working out with Joey has been the driving force for a much needed addition to our active lifestyle, and renewed appreciation for our physical and mental fitness. I have been working out at The House for a little less than a year now. The House grants you access to one of the best training facilities and staff in the area. With my background in athletics, I have worked with many trainers, and Joey O’Brien at The House is by far the best I have had the privilege to work with.
